Frequently asked questions

What is ICSI treatment in Infertility ?

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection(ICSI) is a specialized form of in Vitro Fertilization(IVF) that is used primarily for the treatment of severe form of SOTA and Azoospermia.  In that after oocyte retrieval sperms are retrieved from the male reproductive tract using special techniques (MESA, PESA, TESE,TESA) Then, Morphologically good sperm selected and injected into the Oocyte and fertilized.

Can ICSI causes Twins?

Fertilization rates with ICSI range from 50 to 80 percent.  However, not all fertilized eggs develops into healthy embryos. Couples that use ICSI with IVF have about a 30 to 35 percent chance for twins and a 5 to 10 percent chance for having triplets or more.

How is sperm chosen for ICSI?

The ICSI process is standard with all in vitro fertilization procedures. The process injects one, selected sperm into the cytoplasm of an individual oocyte(egg).  The embryologist will select the “best looking” sperm using a fine glass needle.

How many eggs fertilize with ICSI?

The most important indicator of ICSI success appears to be the fertilization rate achieved with the ICSI procedure.  The fertilization rate in our hospital is 70 to 80 percent.  That is to say, on average, eight out of every 10 eggs will fertilize normality.

How many sperm do you need for ICSI?

In theory, one sperm is all that is needed to fertilize an egg and achieve a successful pregnancy using ICSI techniques.  For most oligozoospermic patients, sperm are retrieved successfully from their ejaculated samples collected on the day of egg retrieval, sperm retrieval done from the testis or epdidymisis with special techniques in Azoospermic patients.

Can ICSI damage the egg?

Fertilization rates with ICSI range from 50 to 80 percent.  However, not all fertilized eggs develop into healthy embryos.  Unfortunately, some eggs and embryos do become damaged during the ICSI process.

Why ICSI used?

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection(ICSI) is a specialized form of in Vitro Fertilisation(IVF) that is used primarily for the treatment of severe cases of male factor infertility and Azoospermia.  ICSI involves the injection of a single sperm directly into a mature egg.

Is ICSI different from IVF?

The key difference between IVF and ICSI is how the sperm fertilizes the egg.  In IVF, the egg and sperm (of which there are multiple) are left in a petri dish to fertilize on their own.  In ICSI, one sperm is directly injected into the egg.

When you recommenend ICSI it?

  •     The man’s sperm count is very low.( < 2 million)
  •       The sperm have poor motility (movement) or are in other ways abnormal
  •       The sperm has been retrieved surgically from the epididymis(PESA) or the testes(TESA) or needs to be extracted from urine after retrograde or electro-ejaculation.
  •       There are high levels of antisperm antibodies in the semen.
  •        If your previous IVF treatment using standard IVF Insemination failed to achieve fertilization.

Tips or suggestions to improve the success rate of ICSI?

  • Eat healthy – Acid protein rich foods, cut down carbohydrate, healthy diet improve the success rate of IUI, hence pregnancy.
  • Avoid smoking
  • De-Stress and control anxiety
  • Take all prescribed meditation
  • Be Happy.

How soon will we know if this treatment was successful?

You will most likely know in about 2 weeks – if you become pregnant.  You may miss your next period.  A blood test will confirm whether or not you are pregnant.
